Private use of the internet
Internet in dormitories
All rooms in the AKAFÖ dormitories are connected to the Ruhr-University network through a high-speed internet connection. Internet access provided by the company EWT
is already included in the rent. Some private halls are also linked to the university network. You can use the internal residence network without being connected to the internet.
In order to use the internet access in the halls of residence, you only need a network card and a network cable to connect your computer to the connection point in your room. If you are a RUB-student, you can use your logIn to dial in. All others receive the logIn from EWT.
More information about internet in halls you can find under http://homepage.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/patrick.happel/r.a-faq/
Another method is used by the church-owned hall Haus Michael
. Thanks to the initiative of the student group Haus Michael auf Draht
("on the wire") the house was connected to the university network through a radio link in 2000. The user fee of Haus Michael is 10,- €
a month, for the network card and other accessories a deposit of 30,- €
is taken. A user application must be filled in.
Internet from home
If you don’t live in halls of residence, there are a number of ways of getting internet access. To dial in through a modem or ISDN you will need an analogous or a digital telephone line. For the dial-up there are various providers to choose from, with or without basic fees as well as flat-rates. An internet connection via modem or ISDN is however fairly slow.
For fast broadband connections there are additional costs involved, e.g. a DSL-Connection has a basic fee of about 15,- €
to 25,- € a month. To this user fees must be added, cheap flat rates start at about 5,- € a month. For DSL too, you need a telephone landline. It is possible to dial up through TV-cables, the electricity lines or satellite links.
