Riding a bike

cycle track (Bild: Pixelquelle.de)Compared to other university cities like Freiburg or Münster riding a bike is not very common in Bochum. In city traffic, riding a bike is not very convenient, but around Bochum there are many nice cycle tracks.

Some students take their bike from the dormitory to the university. There is a storeroom for bikes in most dormitories. You will find bike stands at the university where you can "park" your bike. However, you should lock your bike to make sure that you will find it when you come back later. You will find affordable bikes at flea markets, on eBay or on bulletins at the university or in dormitories. When you leave Bochum, you can just resell your bike.

With the semester ticket, you can take your bike in the subway, on the bus or on regional trains after 9 a.m.. For further details about the rules, take a look at http://www.vrr.de/Hilfe_FAQ/antworten.htm#fahrradmitnahmeoff-site link

Cycle tours

You can take nice tours across the Ruhr area by bike. The Kaiserrouteoff-site link, for example, is very recommendable. Also, we can recommend the cycle tracks that have been built on shut down train tracks (e.g. the "Erzbahn", starting in the Westpark).
