Flying
Flying is usually the most expensive means of transportation. Lufthansa
is the biggest German airline. Lufthansa's home airport is in Frankfurt.
Famous airlines like Lufthansa
, Air France
or Swiss Air
are not exactly cheap but they also have interesting offers.
So called "no frills" airlines (Billigflieger) are much less expensive because they save on service and airport fees. For this reason they often don't take off from the bigger international airports but the smaller regional airports. If you want to fly as cheaply as possible you should compare the offers from these airlines.

Tips for flying
- Try to book as early as possible. Then you will get the cheapest tickets and the biggest rebate. Usually "no frills" airlines offer only the first 15% of tickets at the lowest rate, after that the price goes up.
- The famous airlines also offer low budget offers at bargain prices.
- Pay special attention to extra costs when booking, e.g. extra charges or taxes.
- Inquire about how much luggage you are allowed to take. The weight limit is different from flight to flight, usually you are allowed up to take up to 20 kg free. Heavy luggage costs extra!
- Clarify ahead of time how you can get to your airport inexpensively. Especially the airports used by "no frills" airlines are often somewhat secluded and harder to reach than the bigger international airports.
- You should be at the airport and check in at least 1 ½ - 2 hours before departure. Changing your flight can be very expensive.
