Registration as a citizen

The obligatory registration is a duty of every citizen in Germany. If you want to stay in Germany for more than three months, you should immediately register in the citizen office of the town hall right after your arrival. This applies also for EU citizens and for students who live in a hotel or with friends in the first time. Therefore, you should either register a change of address or sign out if you leave Germany.

The legal deadline for the registration is only one week! If you register too late, the city can demand a fine.

You can register at the citizen's office of the town hall:

Bürgerbüro im Rathaus Bochum
Willy-Brandt-Platz 2-6
44777 Bochum
Phone 0234/910-1950

The following documents are needed fort he registration:

  • passport/identification card
  • original of the rental contract or the direct-debit mandate of the landlord
  • entry certificate to a German class or a sixth form college

Afterwards, you can go to the alien's registration office and ask for a residence permit.
