It is an institution jointly run by the Protestant Church in the Rhineland, the Protestant Church of Westphalia and the "Lippische Landeskirche". Founded in 1971 through a contract between these churches, it is the biggest University of Applied Science run by the Protestant Church in Germany.

The Evangelic University of Applied Science is an offer for people engaged in social and churchly projects. Its basic degreesoff-site link Social Work (with special, selectable emphases), Therapeutic Pedagogy and Care fulfill its mission to qualify students for careers in welfare. The additional degree Congregation Pedagogy and Deaconry provides students with scientifically based capabilities of action in the fields of Clerical Congregation Practise and Deaconry.

The Evangelic University of Applied Science furthermore takes seriously its research- and development-promise and conducts further education. The EFH has about 2000 registered students, 55 teaching professors, 7 specialist teachers and 124 contract teachers. Foreign students make up 4,6% of the student body, the percentage is highest in Therapeutic Pedagogy with 5,8%. Because the courses on offer are mostly geared towards the social and church sector in Germany, most foreign students are "Bildungsinländer", i.e. people who have been educated in Germany already prior to their university degree. Most of them have southern or eastern European citizenship.
