Ruhr-University Bochum
In 1965, the Ruhr-University Bochum
(RUB) was the first university founded in postwar West Germany. Since its foundation, the RUB has rapidly grown and provided the Ruhr region with vital intellectual leadership in its postwar period of transition.
Today, the university serves more than 32,000 students and employs 5,000 dedicated faculty members and staff. About 4,300 of the students do not have the German citizenship (approx. 13,6 %).
With 20 faculties offering more than 45 undergraduate programmes and 65 graduate programmes, the Ruhr-University provides the entire spectrum of studies
in sciences, arts and humanities, engineering and medicine. The Students are able to create their own innovative curricula combining subjects and courses from these different fields embedded in the international Bachelor-Master system.
Research at Bochum
is varied and rich, stretching from neuroscience, medical technology and computer science, all the way to the field of "global change". The Ruhr-University is an internationally known center of excellence in the areas of life sciences, plasma technology and material science. The university's interdisciplinary approach to research is also reflected in its international Graduate Schools for young researchers, e. g. the International Graduate School of Neuroscience
, the Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
and the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics
.
Unlike nearly all the older universities in Germany, the Ruhr-University is a campus university
, everything is within walking distance. In total, this creates a close-knit, innovative and culturally-diverse community. The Ruhr-University is located in Querenburg, on the southern outskirts of Bochum.
