Technological University of Applied Sciences Georg Agricola
The Technological University of Applied Sciences Georg Agricola
(TFH) is an officially recognised, private university. It is located in the North of the city centre. The Technological University is run by the DMT-Association for Doctrine and Education mbH
(DMT-LB). The DMT-LB is also responsible for the neighbouring German Mining Museum
.
The origin of the Technological University lies in the mining industry. The TFH was founded in 1816 as a school of mining ("Bochumer Bergschule") and now, for almost 200 years, it has taught knowledge about energy and environment. Since 1971, the TFH traded under the name of "FH Bergbau". In 1995, the university renamed itself to also integrate subjects like geological technology, environmental technology, prospective energies and information technology into the name. It is named after Georgius Agricola
, who was a pioneer of mining and mineralogy who supported comprehensive and responsible thinking and acting.
Today, 14 courses of study
are offered and in some cases, job-accompanying studying is also possible. The range reaches from Geological Engineering and Mining, Engineering, Process Engineering and Electrical Engineering to Information Technology. Studies and teachings at the TFH keep to the current standards of the industry, for example, 80% of the dissertations are written in an enterprise.
The TFH cooperates with foreign partner colleges in Spain, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and China and offers international Bachelor and Master Studies. In 2003, the TFH signed an outline agreement with the Bejing Institute of Petrochemical Technology to found a common college in Bejing.
All in all, there are about 1,500 students at the TFH and 11.4% do not have a German nationality. Approximately 30% of the students use the opportunity to do job-accompanying studies.
There are 34 professors and 108 part-time lecturers working for the TFH which means that there are only 36 students per professor.
